Ebooks have gone from the domain of the obscure world of the online geek to the wide array of people in the public at large, thanks to the popularity of Amazon's Kindle and it's copy cat rivals.

Some of the e-book formats have been around since the heyday of the electronic daytimer planner. It also seems as though there is no single standard that is universal among all the popular EE book reader devices.

However, there is available a software program that will allow you convert your PDF files to a format that is better suited for reading on your EE book readers. This software program is called Calibre. It is an open source program that is published under the GNU license this means it is free to use for anybody who wants to download and install it.

Follow the instructions to install the program on your computer. Once you have the program installed you will find that the interface is quite easy to use. Actually, all you have to do is add an e-book with the add button, convert the e-book format you want, and then you are ready to read your new selection on your e-book reader.

You can easily select the different formats for input and output of your e-book from the drop down boxes on the convert file screen. As you become more familiar with the program you can change some of the default settings for your version routine to suit your own personal preferences. You have a great deal of flexibility with this program.

Now after you have inverted your file, you wonder where the program stored. It will be located in the Calibre library that the program placed in your documents folder when you install the software. Within a folder of converted e-books you will find a copy of the original file and newly converted format file.

The program is updated quite frequently as there is a large group of programmers who volunteer their time to maintain and enhance this software. Don't be surprised when you open the program there is a pop-up displaying the fact that a new version is available for download.

So now you have a way to use all those PDF files that you have been gathering to collect digital dust on your hard drive. Simply convert the PDF file to the format of your choice and you can reread or read for the first time these files you felt were valuable enough to download

Ebooks were around before the Kindle was invented, they have existed as long as the internet as dispensed information in the printed text document. In other words, the ebook and the internet sort of grew up together.

First, there was the text document. Displayed in green type on the monitor, you could read it on the screen or send it to the printer and read the text on paper.

Soon, word processors began to make the digital document more and more of a standard in every day business and life. Desk top publishing became the smart thing to do and the Adobe PDF format was born.

At first, the ebook was composed of web pages compiled into an executable pc program. Ebook compilers became the tool of choice for online authors. These offered cool animations of book pages turning on the monitor screen. Then the scammers killed the executable ebook with the threat of virus and damaging content.

The PDF format was selected to replace the executable ebook and the ebook world was once again safe to enter. Clickbank.com became a huge market of digital products but still the majority of users had never purchased an ebook.

Amazon changed ebooks with the Kindle. Even though ebook readers have existed in different forms for some time, the Kindle made digital books main stream.
